“Thank Heaven for Little Girls” by Ruby

On November 27, 2012, in Music, song, by mugen

Leslie Rankine (of Silverfish, Pigface, and here as the visible/vocal part of Ruby, her collaboration with Mark Walk) performs, weirdly, before releasing any singles or albums and without any ID in a Mountain Dew commercial. Sadly, there’s no recording or release of the track she’s singing here – a cover of “Thank Heaven for Little Girls.” I’d love to have a copy of that… sigh.

Hyper Crush – “Keep Up”

I’d never heard of either of the bands opening for The Naked and Famous on April 9 at The Vogue in Indianapolis. Since I had at least a two-hour drive to get to the show (and thinking that the time zone would change… which it did, sorta, but not to any advantage), I figured I’d check them out at least a bit with whatever I could find online. I found about 10 songs by the Minneapolis band Now, Now on YouTube and gave them a listen to prep for the show. My selection was a mix of tunes from their 2010 Neighbors EP and their 2012 CD Threads. For me, their best tune is “Wolf.”

The live set itself was pretty great. The lighting was muted and subtle, and the band had to play in a small space at the front of the stage in front of the other two bands’ gear, but the closeness made the set more intimate, as if Now, Now were playing on a smaller stage, like in a bar. I could hear the band talk to one another — Jess was having trouble tuning her guitar before a song, and she told the others “Don’t go yet!” It all added to the intimacy of the set, which was a nice counterpoint to The Naked and Famous set that came later.

They played several songs I recognized, but again, I really dug “Wolf,” and they dedicated “Roommates” to the woman working the merch table (who was REALLY cool and helpful when I arrived and picked up my special order items). After their set, during Vacationer’s show, the totally adorable Jess worked the merch table and signed a copy of Threads for me. The generosity and humilty was really awesome. At the end of the night, the whole band was working the merch table and agreed to sign a poster for me and posed for this pic.

Jack White – “Sixteen Saltines”

On April 14, 2012, in Music, song, by mugen

Much less country-fried and more alt.rock than I expected, the video starts off like the promo for a very weird cable TV show or a niche movie starring almost-famous weirdos you only think you’ve heard of. From there, the audacity of the images is only undermined by the obviousness of the attempt to be audacious – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s a media-studies “impact on children” nightmare, intentionally so. The kid pushing the cart off the second floor was literally vertiginous for me. White’s voice was obviously totally him, but with a more worldly, nuanced tone or sound or something, and I can dig it.

New Tune by LMFAO – “One Day”

I dunno how I feel about it. I’d definitely be playing the hell out of it if I were still DJing in Japan, for sure. But compared to their “stupider” stuff, it’s less satisfying… I like their humor more than anything.

Trologic Remixes “Party Rock Anthem” Live

On March 22, 2012, in Music, song, tech, by mugen

Using DJay software, a Vestax Spin controller, and a MIDI keyboard mapped to work with DJay (it’s pretty easy to set up)

This is a really nice mix between the prepwork a DJ needs to do with setting cues and loops, and live performance (using a lot of features – effects, etc. – introduced in the newest version of DJay).

Starter Kit

On March 19, 2012, in Music, by mugen

My former student Ryan is guitarist (and media guy) for Starter Kit. Their newest release looks to be 2009’s Unsettled.

Video for their song “Twilight Regret”:

I saw them back in … 2005 maybe?… in Dekalb, Illinois. The keyboardist is a new addition. They’ve stayed in the same hard rock vein with melodic vocals and emotional/internal/relationship-inspired lyrics. They’ve moved a bit away from their former frenetic constantly noodly guitarwork (I liked it!). You can see what I mean about their older stuff here in their first video, for “Tomorrow’s Never Better”:
