So… she finally made it to the States, but this is something of a surprise. The amount of Korean is nice. The posturing is almost camp, though – so I’m not sure how seriously it’ll be taken. It feels very foreign, still – and very produced/constructed. (“Hello Bitches” was produced by K-Pop cornerstone TEDDY in a style reminiscent of Lex Luger.)
I’m wondering where this is headed. The video is directed and produced by Parris Goebel, which is interesting and kind of cool. The song has almost 7 million listens on Spotify as of today, and charted on Spotify at number 1 for awhile. The song currently has a 5 star average rating from 285 users on iTunes. Her American debut album will be produced by Scooter Braun.
K-PopStarz lavishes the praise on a bit heavily.
New album due soon… but how soon?

Audrey Gallagher was vocalist for my favorite 4AD-signed band, Scheer. I’d say Scheer is in my top 3 favorite bands ever, with Skinny Puppy and ALL. They rocked and woke me up after a long time searching for good tunes. I was fortunate to “meet” Audrey via MySpace in the mid-late-2000s when I was living in Japan. She was very gracious to my messages and genuinely a kind person when we also connected on Facebook. After Scheer, she was briefly involved in a project called Lima, and then started adding her vocal talent to a number of electro/techno tracks by various artists. It’s gratifying to know that she’s still singing and still involved with music in a much more accessible way.
So Audrey’s started a radio show called VIVA VOCE (“With Living Voice”) and new episodes drop the 3rd Thursday of each month.
Childish Gambino (Donald Glover, of Community fame) has a new album. The first tune is pretty dance-friendly and catchy, for sure. The song dropped on my birthday, Oct. 22, so it’s barely a week old.
Check out “3005” on Hype Machine
Coverage of the release of the new album (titled because of the internet) from HitFix says to expect the whole record on December 10.
And if you can’t wait that long, read the Childish Gambino blog.
Boing-Boing has an article about an emergent genre of dance music called Zouk Bass. Cool overview of the sound that includes a 47 minute YouTube link to a live set, several SoundCloud tracks as examples, and links to 2 zipped sampler collections for free. If you’re into low BPM (90-115) African-inspired sounds, this is a pretty nice collection of stuff that is very listenable and danceable and would make for a nice addition to ambient and house dance collections.
I’m going to see these guys on Monday! Very excited about it. Just checked out their homepage and found this link:
